While Cletus Kasady, a.k.a. Carnage, wreaked havoc during “Absolute Carnage” the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane (where he was incarcerated) was destroyed! Now the superhuman criminal rehabilitation facility has been rebuilt, with state-of-the-art technology and surveillance, and under the watchful eye (and strong right-hand) of Mercedes “Misty” Knight. Not to mention that the head of security is none other than John “the Man Wolf” Jameson. Also, Mayor Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. the Kingpin (he’s the Mayor of NYC in case you haven’t been keeping up) has hired on Norman “the Green Goblin” Osborne as a consultant and has hired a few other surprise former inmates to run the asylum. So now that the nuts have taken over the nuthouse, so to speak, there’s also something dark beneath the institute that is about to let all hell break loose!
While not as well-known as DC Comics/Batman’s Arkham Asylum in Gotham, Marvel’s premier sanitarium in New York City (inspired by Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital) has certainly had its fair share of villainous residents, since its inception in the Spider-Man comics in the 1990’s it has held just about every baddie from Chameleon, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Jackal, Massacre, Mysterio, Vulture, Vermin, and especially Carnage! Named after the late Doctor Jonas Ravencroft, the institute was founded by (the also late and appropriately named) Doctor Ashley Kafka, and has appeared several times in the past 20 years or so. Be sure to read up on the official History of the Ravencroft Institute for the Criminally Insane.
All of the events that have led up to this current incarnation of Ravencroft can be read in the “Absoulte Carnage: Lethal Protectors” and “Web of Venom: Cult of Carnage” and of course the seminal “Maximum Carnage” storyline. While other one-shots precede this story like “Ruins of Ravencroft”, this five-issue limited series written by Frank Tieri and with art by Angel Unzueta explores the new-and-improved asylum and all the darkness and evil that reside in and under it. Be sure to check out the other “Ruins of Ravencroft” one-shots featuring Sabretooth, Dracula and Carnage!
