“When innocent blood is spilled, a spirit of vengeance is born…” GHOST RIDER

If you haven’t been following up with Ghost Rider, you might not be the only one. Since last year’s “Damnation” story-line the evil Mephisto has vacated his throne (along with the help of Dr. Strange and an army of former Riders) as the King of Hell, and Johnny Blaze, the original motorcycle-riding Ghost Rider, is now king! Later, King Blaze meets up with the recently deceased future Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, otherwise known as Cosmic Ghost Rider (“Guardians of the Galaxy”#6), also the current Ghost Rider, Robbie Reyes wants to get rid of the flame-headed demon inside him and performs an exorcism on his car, but Blaze has some plans of his own for the newest Ghost Rider and the Avengers (“Avengers” #22)! Not to mention the existence of Alejandra Jones and the events of “Absolute Carnage: Symbiote of Vengeance”! Okay, all caught up…No? Good, me either. To bring the 1990’s Ghost Rider back into the Marvel Universe, readers have literally gone to Hell and back to get us where we are now.

“The King of Hell” Part 1

While the Ghost Rider Johnny Blaze has tried to maintain order in Hell as the rebellious demons who favor Mephisto defy his rule, considering him to be the “False King”. An assortment of demons have escaped to Earth through a portal and Johnny has taken it upon himself to find them. As Johnny arrives back in New York in human form where he finds his long-lost brother Danny Ketch, and fellow Ghost Rider, to help him track them down. There’s also the little matter of Lilith and her claim to the throne of Hell, and nothing short of all-out war will stop her, because Blaze isn’t going to give up the crown without a Hell of a fight!

I have always loved the ‘Ghost Rider’ since I discovered the 1990’s version in Marvel Comics as a teenager. I was drawn to the darkness, as it were, with his striking visage, a flaming skull atop a blazing motorcycle. Going back to the original Ghost Rider (not the Wild West one) of the 1970’s with reprints that were made available, I found an unholy passion in the horror-themed titles and the later “Midnight Sons” imprint that included the Nightstalkers, including Blade, the Vampire Hunter, and of course Morbius, (also returning in November!) the Living Vampire! I must admit I was not impressed by the latest Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider, mostly due to his image change, also he drove a muscle car! But as the Ghost Riders grew in the newest Marvel comics and Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider movies died off, it was about time for the hellfire to be relighted!

This latest “Ghost Rider” sees the long-awaited reunion of the Brothers Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze and Danny Ketch, but it may not be a happy reunion for long, since Blaze King has gone mad with power and Danny is the alcoholic owner of a bar, which is both ironic and tragic. And now that we seem to have at least three Ghost Riders riding around, not including Cosmic Ghost Rider in the future, now all Hell is about to break loose and the battle to be the true King of Hell is about to begin!
