COMIC REVIEW – HELLBOY and the B.P.R.D.: SATURN RETURNS #1

HELLBOY and the B.P.R.D.: SATURN RETURNS #1

With the end of the regular Hellboy and B.P.R.D. comic series earlier this year with the 15-issue “The Devil You Know”, the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. series continues on in its usual short-run series and one-shots, (like last month’s “The Beast of Vargu”) until they decide to restart the series. But since the recent “Hellboy” movie reboot was an unfortunate box-office bomb, fans can return to the comics for his further adventures.

While the small town of Tatoskok Falls, New Hampshire, has been plagued by several disappearances over the years, the community is shocked when a local discovers a pile of corpses that date back decades. When Hellboy and B.P.R.D. Agent Kinsley arrive on the scene, the agents and the local law enforcement throw around a few theories suggesting either a serial killer or supernatural causes, but nothing conclusive as the recent murder victims appear to have had their chests cracked open and their hearts missing.

Set in October 1975, the story also revolves around Elizabeth Sherman’s recent arrival at the BPRD headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut and Professor Bruttenholm’s efforts to calm her, but no avail. This series also marks the appearance of a new agent named Kinsley, first name unknown as yet.

“Saturn Returns” is a three-issue mini-series written by Mike Mignola and Scott Allie, with art by Christopher Mitten, and new colorist Brennan Wagner with letterer Clem Robins. It seems even as the regular B.P.R.D. series ended, fans can be sure that Hellboy and the team aren’t going away anytime soon and this new era of stories set in the past, presents a voluminous amount of stories yet to be told. And I for one am excited to see what comes next.
