What began as a 5-issue limited series in 2005, written by Robert Kirkman (“The Walking Dead”) with art by Sean Phillips (“Hellblazer”), “Marvel Zombies” has spawned a number of sequels and spinoffs over the years. Now, just in time for Halloween, “Marvel Zombies” has been resurrected in this year’s “Marvel Zombies: Resurrection”!

Set in the alternate Earth-2149, Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic has called for Captain America, Tony Stark/Iron Man and Beast/Hank McCoy on an urgent matter. He informs them that Captain Marvel has spotted Galactus, at the edge of Earth’s solar system. As select members of the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four investigate, they discover that the ‘Devourer of Worlds’ is in fact dead! They soon find out too late that Galactus’ body is now inhabited by a strange organism that has transformed the heroes into ferocious zombies! But as the heroes try to escape they are overwhelmed by the cannibalistic monsters and Galactus’ body is heading on a collision course with Earth!

Since the original series came from a crossover story-arc of “Ultimate Fantastic Four”, the reboot of the “All-New, All-Different Marvel” multiverse has put an end to the Ultimate Marvel universe and a new version of Earth-2149 has been established. “Marvel Zombies: Resurrection” is a new vision of the Marvel story by writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson (“Aquaman”, “The Last God”) and artist Leonard Kirk (“Supergirl”). While the Marvel Zombies gained a substantial popularity in the last decade, they have been absent since the 20156 “Secret Wars” story-line. Now, like many other titles that are getting a reboot this year and into 2020, such as “X-Men” and “Thor” just to name a few, it seemed only a matter of time before the zombies were brought back to life to feed upon the Marvel Universe once again.

While this version of the Marvel Zombies seem less visceral and gory than previous Marvel Zombies, these infected seem very reminiscent of the Rage Virus as depicted in the movies “28 Days Later” (2002) and in “28 Weeks Later” (2007), complete with red eyes. Yet the infected retain the ability to speak which suggests a new self-awareness that was not present before. The nature of this zombie-like virus is apparent when Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers appears as one of the first to be consumed by it, with blood streaming from her eyes as she addresses Wolverine when he comments that he has “smelled” something like it before. However, the ex-Carol Danvers remarks:

“You’ve never known any like US. We’re something NEW!”

This terrifying new vision of the Marvel Zombies presents a much more disturbing incarnation than before, and since the original had dragged on with five major sequels and several spin-offs, including “Marvel Zombies Return”, “Marvel Zombies Supreme” and “Marvel Zombies Destroy!” it’s definitely time for a change as some new talent brings seemingly new “life” to a worn-out idea.

“It is evident that we are hurrying onward to some exciting knowledge—some never-to-be-imparted secret, whose attainment is destruction.”
